Bible Reading: Luke 12:32-40

Dear Friends

Reflections on Women`s Month;

This month we pay tribute to the thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956, to protest against the extension of
Pass laws to women. Looking at the daily reality of women in the context I live in now, it is clear that we are still in a struggle to break down gender
stereotypes and overcome barriers that disenfranchise women across the social and economic spectrum.

Statistics on gender-based violence and femicide show a disturbing trend of violence against women and children that doesn’t seem to be abating and
should be viewed as not just a feminist matter but, a human rights issue. As a Christian woman, my daily reality is one of pushing and forging through barriers while trying to maintain my “spiritual glow.” Many women and men who fought in the struggle against inequality and discrimination, cleared the path for my generation to come through and reap the opportunities available to us. But, the playing fields are not yet level in gender dynamics,

I’m often disappointed even in a space where I should find comfort, the Church. On days when I feel burnt out at both ends, I turn to my bible and research stories of women who have shown a resilience and strong faith. Lydia of Thyatira is one such woman, seller of expensive cloths, Lydia’s business abilities and wealth did not hinder her from worshiping God. She opened her heart to receiving Christ as her saviour and quickly put her faith in action by taking care of the Apostle Paul, Silas and many others, welcoming them into her home. She no doubt was one of the women Paul referenced as having laboured with him to spread the good news in
Philippines 4:3.

My chosen contribution to the human and feminist struggles of my time is to model women like Lydia, who knew that God’s grace is ultimately what really matters. As a mother and leader, my prayer is that we raise a generation of women who find this depth of spiritual purpose, to openly and willingly share their spiritual glow, cheering the hearts of many in their life journey.

Happy Women’s Month to all women of SPMC!

Shalom, Phumza Rengqe
