Sea Point Methodist Church
History

History

spmc-sky1Our church was formed way back in 1896, when a group Wesleyans, residing in the Sea and Green Point areas decided to purchase this property to establish their own premises, instead of using a hired hall. The first minister, Rev Hodges, was appointed in 1897, and the church building dedicated in 1898. Since then many ministers have come and gone, including the Rev Theo Kotze who, as chaplain to Robben Island, served both Nelson Mandela and Robert Sobukwe. Rev Kotze was banned and went into exile in Europe in 1977. During the 1970’s District Six removals, another minister, Rev Tom Parker, invited the banned black members of Chapel Street Church to use our building, even though it was in a ‘whites only’ area. Members of this congregation are still with us, and today we are a proudly diverse congregation.
